What is obesity? It is the term given to the excessive accumulation of fat in the body. Many factors play a role in its development process and mechanism. It is a result triggered by a combination of genetic predisposition, metabolic disorders, eating habits, and psychological conditions. Obesity is a medical problem and negatively affects a person’s health and quality of life.
Obesity can be associated with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, hormonal irregularities, stroke, infertility, and even cancer. The aim of treatment is to prevent both weight gain and the development of chronic diseases and to break this cycle.

What Causes Obesity?
Obesity occurs as a result of a sedentary lifestyle brought on by daily life (a lifestyle that develops with insufficient physical activity and exercise) and eating habits, and weight gain and increased limitation of movement further increase weight gain in this process. In many individuals, one of the main reasons is that the calories taken in through diet in daily life are more than the calories burned in daily life. With the start of weight loss, improvement in a person’s metabolic diseases is seen immediately and an increase in mobility is observed.
What Is Body Mass Index?
Body mass index is a measure used in defining obesity. It is calculated by dividing weight by the square of height in meters. For a person who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 75 kg, it is calculated as 75/(1.75)x(1.75) and measured as 24.5. Body mass index alone is insufficient to evaluate obesity. In some athletes, these values are seen to be high with an increase in muscle mass. Body mass index does not show a person’s fat values and measurements. To help guide treatment decisions, a person’s waist circumference is measured. Weight-related health problems are more common in men with a waist circumference greater than 102 cm and in women with a waist circumference greater than 89 cm.

Obesity begins first with examining the patient’s complaints and the time that has passed regarding the development of these complaints. With an experienced specialist team, accompanying diseases that develop along with obesity are also evaluated, and decisions are made regarding treatment methods and surgical procedures.
