A successful surgery was performed at ANTALYA Kepez State Hospital with a system applied for the first time in Turkey. It was stated that this surgery, performed by Specialist Dr. Mehmet İlker Turan from the General Surgery Clinic of Kepez State Hospital and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Dinç from Atatürk State Hospital, is the first center in Turkey where both thyroid and parathyroid surgery were performed simultaneously.

Specialist Dr. Mehmet İlker Turan said that the surgery was performed through small incisions made inside the mouth, just inside the lip, with the help of a camera and using special instruments. Stating that the surgery was performed through the mouth without any incision or scar on the patient’s neck, Specialist Dr. Turan said, "Thus, better cosmetic results, less pain, and a faster return to normal life become possible for patients. Since the oral mucosa heals very quickly and without scarring, there is no deterioration in the patients’ eating and drinking functions. With this technique, as in classical open surgery, it is possible to reach both sides of the thyroid gland, and every procedure that can be performed in open surgery can be applied in selected patients," he said.
Closed Method
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bülent Dinç said, "Our patient Sevgi Arslan is 55 years old. While investigations were ongoing regarding her complaints of severe joint and bone pain for 4 years, she was finally referred to us due to high blood calcium levels. In our evaluations, we found that the small parathyroid glands next to the goiter gland were overactive. When we deepened the investigation, we also found that the goiter gland on the same side was diseased, and we offered her this surgery. We stated that we would perform the operation with a different method and that there would be no incision on her skin, and she accepted. As of yesterday, we successfully performed our surgery by removing the goiter with the closed method and also removing the parathyroid gland. We operated on our patient 24 hours ago. She currently has no problems, and no complications have developed. She can walk and does not have difficulty eating. We hope to discharge her during the day," he said.
For The First Time In Turkey
Kepez State Hospital Chief Physician Specialist Dr. Ramazan Gürkan stated that their hospital started providing service in the region about a year ago, and said, "It is one of Turkey’s few new, well-equipped, and modern hospitals. As our surgeons also stated, it is very important for us that thyroid surgery, which is frequently performed today, is a technique first applied in Turkey. The implementation of such an innovative surgery at Kepez State Hospital gives us happiness and pride," he said.
Sevgi Arslan, who said that she had been in search of a solution to get rid of the joint and bone pain she had been experiencing for about 4 years, said, "For four years, there was no doctor I didn’t go to, and in the end I went to my teacher Bülent. After he did my examination and tests, he said that I would regain my health after the surgery he and teacher İlker would perform. So I accepted and I got rid of all my pain. I suffered in vain all this time. My four years passed in pain, and now I’m very well. I had surgery yesterday, but it feels like I didn’t. I thank my teachers," she said. (DHA)
